One of youngest master sommeliers, Carlton McCoy now is Napa winery CEO, transforming industry

North Bay Business Journal
 - June 2024

In my role at Lawrence Wine Estates, I envisioned creating a model and tone for a wine company that hasn’t existed prior, to model the way forward where company culture can reflect the way you want society to be. The goal in the end is to leave the world a better place and within the wine industry, to create access for people who have not traditionally been invited in.

The Best Value Proseccos for 2024

Last, but by no means least, is Villa Sandi Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Cartizze DOCG. The initial seeds for the business were planted in the 1920s by Mario Polegato, the grandfather of the current president, Giancarlo, however, it was not until the 1970s, when the family bought Villa Sandi, the current Palladian-style estate.

Wine Enthusiast says “aromas of white stone fruit, white spring flower and alpine herb almost leap from the glass in this fragrant sparkler. Polished and savory, the radiant palate features Granny Smith apple, lemon zest and wild sage alongside an elegant, foaming mousse and bright acidity.”

Mazzei Poggio Badiola Toscana

I have been in love with the wines of Mazzei since studying wine in Italy more than 15 years ago, which is admittedly a tiny drop in the bucket considering the Mazzei family has been producing wine in Italy since 1435. This not only makes them one of the most prolific and iconic families in Italian wine, but also among the longest running Italian companies of any kind. With estates throughout the country, including Tuscany in central Italy, the Maremma in coastal Italy, and Sicily in the south, Mazzei’s entire portfolio encompasses the best of what this celebrated wine destination has to offer when it comes to delicious wines for all occasions.

New additions to the list in 2024 include Failla, a renowned maker of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay serving its wines in an old hunting lodge; Stony Hill, a historic white-wine specialist that’s gotten an eye-catching (if controversial) midcentury modern makeover; and Domaine Chandon, one of the valley’s go-to sparkling wine houses that added several new options for visitors recently.

3 Incredible California Cabernet Sauvignon Producers To Watch

Forbes
- by Kate Dingwall
 - May 2024

Ink Grade doesn’t make it easy for visitors to seek out their wines. Their estate is perched precariously high up the side of Howell Mountain, winding up through the hills until the elevation makes your ears pop. But that’s how the winery—founded by the folks from Heitz Cellar—like it. They love the excitement, intrigue and opulence that mountain fruit offers. They love the hidden gems of vineyards, the ones tucked into alpine slopes or carved out of extreme rock faces. Winemaker Matt Taylor, who cut his teeth at Joseph Swan and Domaine Dujac before he transplanted back to California, truly believes that these high-altitude sites offer incredible, grand cru potential with immense intensity of fruit, a gripping depth, and a singing minerality. As Napa remains in climatic uncertainty (heat waves! fire!) mountain fruit offers a lot of excitement about the future.

Racines 2020 Wenzlau Chardonnay

Decanter

Beguiling complexity, depth and beauty mark this outstanding Chardonnay from the Wenzlau Family Vineyard in the Sta Rita Hills. In a year when so many of California’s wine regions were devastated by smoke, this wine shows a fresh, airy poise—delicate and precise aromas of crushed chalk, petrichor, sweet white flower pollen and hints of seaspray.

92

Burgess 2018 Contadina Cabernet Sauvignon

Vinous
 - October 2021

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is a powerful, old-school wine. Dark cherry, plum, scorched earth, game, licorice and tar give the 2018 plenty of complexity. Big, potent tannins lend quite a bit of muscle, but there is more than enough fruit and overall balance to support many years in the cellar. Dark red fruit, mint spice and licorice linger. This is very nicely done.

93

Racines 2020 Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay

Decanter

Classically cool climate Chardonnay aromatics of soft white florals, crushed chalk and a touch of mint. The palate has verve and energy with savoury petrichor-driven minerality coming to the fore, followed on by bruised apples, a touch of cardamom and honey to finish adding depth and complexity along the way.

94

Racines 2020 Sainte Rose Pinot Noir

Decanter
2020 is the inaugural edition of this gorgeous wine—aromatics of fresh smashed raspberries, lavender and notes of crushed stone. The palate is a homage to the Burgundian style, emphasising minerality and florals, berry fruits, and savoury garrigue. Red and blue fruits intertwined with clove, thyme and pine tar carry this wine to a savoury, concentrated finish.
94

Racines 2020 Sanford & Benedict Pinot Noir

Decanter
This Pinot Noir is indelibly marked by pungent and stirring floral aromatics accented by frankincense, leather and smoke. The palate shows a generosity of fruit, but a significant amount of the whole cluster gives this wine savoury edges. Notes of crushed basalt, thyme and wild sumac envelop a core of blue and red fruits. Clove, five-star anise and a hint of cassia bark accompany this wine through its finish, measured in 5-minute intervals.
94

Racines 2020 La Rinconada Pinot Noir

Decanter

Aromas of anise, smoke, mer and dried sumac pull out notes of wet stone and dried savoury herbs. The palate is supple and red-fruited but backed by crushed basalt and Mediterranean scrub, leading one to want to revisit this wine in five years.

95

Racines 2020 Sanford & Benedict Chardonnay

Decanter

Aromatics of bruised apples and petrichor are punctuated by notes of sea foam and smoke. The palate is energised by savoury briny citrus and crushed chalk. Electric acidity amplifies the wines mineral character with hints of smoke and crushed limestone with hints of grilled lime and green mango. A revelatory California Chardonnay.

94

Racines 2020 Bentrock Chardonnay

Decanter

Confit lemon and oyster shell nose. Citrusy and fresh, notes of lemon peel and vanilla almond. Power and richness yet a vibrant elegance.

93

Racines 2020 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

Decanter

Sleek and classy. Overt with aromas of ripe dark fruits, violets, dark chocolate and spices. The palate is bright with freshness, dense with ripe tannin and fruit, yet captured at a point of real freshness. Generously juicy, followed by a long finish.
