In the heart of Margaux AOC stands Château Lascombes. With a history dating back to the 16th century, this distinguished estate was classified in 1855 as Second Grand Cru Classé. The 1855 Classification is both a recognition and a responsibility, committing Château Lascombes to maintaining its rank and commitment, vintage after vintage, to this terroir recognized as one of the finest in the world for wine production.
Situated on one of the most beautiful gravelly hilltops, it peaks at an altitude of 65 feet, making it the highest point in the appellation and one of the highest in the Médoc. The geological gift of the Médoc terroir is its poor soil. This forces the vines to develop deep roots to find the nutrients and minerals they need to grow, giving them a unique concentration. The extra few feet of effort required on the plots of the historic Lascombes terroir due to its altitude gives the vines the special character that earned them their exceptional ranking.
Château Lascombes is one of the largest estates in Margaux with 297 acres spread around three of the five villages of the appellation, offering an unmatched diversity of different soils and terroirs. Estate vineyards are planted to 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc.
In 2022, the Lawrence family purchased the estate, which marked a change of direction and a new chapter. First and foremost, it represented a return to family, in the tradition of the great dynasties that have shaped the property’s history. In addition, the Lawrence family, along with CEO and Managing Director, Axel Heinz, chose to return Lascombes’ Grand Vin to a style more rooted in Bordeaux tradition and classic proportions, with a predominance of Cabernet-Sauvignon grown on gravelly soil.
